For Paul H. Flowers Jr., building a national reputation in employee benefits has not meant distancing himself from Gary, Indiana. If anything, his expanding platform has given him another way to speak about the city and the people who live there.
That connection has become particularly visible in recent months. Paul, founder and CEO of Superior Insurance Advisors, was featured in a press release alongside two attorneys involved in litigation related to NIPSCO and the Gary power outage. His participation placed him in a public conversation about an issue affecting residents and businesses in the city where his firm is based.
At the same time, his professional work is earning recognition beyond Northwest Indiana.
A National First in Benefits Leadership
Paul became the first African American to earn the Validation Institute’s Fiduciary Advisor certification in October 2025. He is among the first ten advisers nationwide to hold the credential, while Superior Insurance Advisors has been independently designated a Validated Fiduciary Firm.
More recently, Black Leaders Worldwide included Paul among its “2026 Men You Need To Know,” recognizing him alongside leaders and professionals from a range of fields.
The milestones have raised Paul’s profile, but his core work remains centered on a practical problem for business leaders: understanding where healthcare dollars are going and whether the advice surrounding those decisions is truly independent.
Asking Who the Adviser Works For
Superior Insurance Advisors says it is compensated exclusively by clients rather than insurance carriers or vendors. That structure is central to Paul’s argument that CEOs and CFOs deserve advice free from financial relationships with companies selling products into their health plans.
“For too long, employers have funded a system built to profit carriers, not companies,” Paul said. “Becoming the first African American to earn this certification isn’t the finish line. It’s proof of the standard I’m holding the whole industry to.”
His approach also puts greater attention on ERISA fiduciary responsibilities. Paul encourages executives to document their decision making, examine plan data and look beyond the familiar cycle of annual renewals.
Local Roots, Wider Reach
Paul brought that conversation to Chicago on March 7, 2026, appearing with Paul Getter at the Speakpreneur event at the Omni Hotel. Before an audience of executives and business owners, he addressed healthcare overspending and broker conflicts.
His professional record includes recognition on Insurance Business America’s “Hot 100” in 2024 and the 2026 Health Value Awards as a charter fiduciary advisor. He is the bestselling author of The Hidden Healthcare Gold Mine, a keynote speaker and host of The Potpourri Place Podcast Show.
Through Superior, Paul also coordinates with the NextGen Benefits network, extending the firm’s reach while maintaining its independent advisory model.
Yet Gary remains an important part of the story. Paul’s recent involvement in the conversation surrounding the NIPSCO outage suggests his idea of fiduciary responsibility extends beyond corporate health plans. At its core, his work keeps returning to the same expectation: people and institutions entrusted with responsibility should be held accountable for how they exercise it.
